Secrets of DP Chemistry
Secrets of DP ChemistryIf you have ever watched science fiction or fantasy films then you will be aware of DP Chemistry. This is a term which refers to the secret 'chemistry' between actors in a movie. It has been described as an intangible, invisible 'force' that helps create a believable connection between actors. The most famous movie for this practice is Star Wars. The techniques used by DP's to create this bond are extensive and subtle. There are hundreds of techniques that use props, special effects, lighting and atmosphere to create this magic. To make it work though, there has to be a healthy amount of communication between actors so that they all feel they are having a part of the movie together and not some kind of silly special effect.Sometimes the connection between DP's can be as simple as each actor needing to check their weapons before going on set. Other times the feeling is much deeper. It is this feeling that provides DP chemistry and props and effects which can enha nce the magic. When filming a fantasy film, if the magician is a skilled actor then he can use his skills to bring out this bond in the actors. He may go into an illusion at one point and a stuntman is taking a shot. As the target rolls away, the magician throws an object, not real but magical, towards the intended target. When the pellet hits the spot that the pellet was supposed to hit, everyone looks at the magician, it is beautiful, and he then grabs the gun out of the hands of the man shooting him.In the middle of the shot, the DP is still talking about something to the actors. They are stunned and breathless at the moment and the magic continues. The acting is so believable and the connection between the DP and his crew is incredible. The illusion is so good that no one is even sure what was really happening. The same effect can be achieved using smaller props. A table or box with a ball inside can be rolled onto the set so that when a different object hits it, it magically glow s. The little objects do not look magical, but they allow the director to add an element of magic to the scene and makes it easier for the actors to make eye contact.DP Chemistry can be achieved with props and visual effects. It can also be achieved with clever use of lighting and angles, making the connections between the actors visible. The secret of DP Chemistry is that it takes place in the background and the actors need to be comfortable with each other. Without it, the film is missing the magic that can be found with the right elements.

21st Century Learning 4 Smart Strategies to Master a Foreign Language Online 21st Century Learning: 4 Smart Strategies to Master a Foreign Language Online Mastering a foreign language requires access to the best language instructors, curriculum and exchange partners.Whats a modern language lover to do?Why, turn to the Internet of course! With its dizzying array of educational blogs, entertaining videos and training sites, the web offers avowed linguaphiles countless resources for learning a foreign language. Before you set off on a road trip to fluency, however, its important to plan your voyage efficiently. From studying the grammatical principles of your chosen language to reinforcing your vocabulary through word exercises, building a study map will help ensure you reach your final destination. Use the following essential tips to learn a foreign language online successfully. 21st Century Learning: 4 Smart Strategies to Master a Foreign Language Online1. Choose the Right Instruction ToolsA veritable embarrassment of riches awaits the modern pupil looking to the net for learning resources. Of course, not all training programs and teach ing tools provide the right keys for achieving your language learning goals. As you embark on a quest to learn a new tongue, youll want to search out two different forms of learning materials: educational programs and source content. In a case study conducted in 2012, researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center discovered that the way were exposed to a language determines whether or not we achieve native-level brain processing. Both classroom learning and immersion methods contribute toward this goal, but immersion has been shown to be more effective at mirroring the brain activity of native speakers. This is an important caveat youll want to consider when searching for instructional tools.A fantastic learning platform for online language immersion is FluentU. FluentU takes real-world videosâ"like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talksâ"and turns them into personalized language learning lessons. It lets you browse videos by difficulty (beginner to native), topic (arts and entertainment, health and lifestyle, etc.) and format (video blog, news, shows, etc.). And FluentU isnt just watching videosâ"its about learning and actively practicing the language you hear in videos. You can use the interactive subtitles, flashcards, audios and vocabulary lists to learn modern languages better than ever!Of course, one of the driving factors in any self-study learners ultimate success is ongoing motivation. Unlike classroom students who are expected to show up for class each day, the online learner has to remain proactive. The internet is awash with source content that would make the language learners of yesteryear salivate. From viral videos to web series, blogs and forums, its simple to access content that correlates with your personal interests.Ready to get started but not quite certain where to start? Consider the following links for learning tools in your chosen language:English: cartoons | Facebook | karaoke songs | memes | social med ia sitesChinese: audiobooks | Disney movies | internet slang | online radio | talk radioFrench: blogs | hashtags | online immersion | online radio | radioGerman: audiobooks | audio dramas | blogs | online radio | pop bands | TwitterJapanese: Netflix movies | online TV | Twitter | song lyricsSpanish: advanced practice | blogs | BuzzFeed | Facebook | Pinterest | online radio | Twitter2. Find a Language Exchange PartnerIts not usual for language teachers to ask their pupils to spend some time conversing with one another, but the power of the World Wide Web opens doors in a whole new way. Fortunately, its not that difficult to find a language exchange partner, but you should think carefully about how to maximize the fruit of your discussions.Making small talk and chatting about current events offers a simple way to expand your vocabulary and get your verb conjugations down pat, but dont shy away from creating a more structured exchange with your partner. Why not attempt to replicate the experience you might otherwise share in a classroom? For example, ask your friend to role play as a shopkeeper and act out a scenario at the checkout line. Let your imagination run wild!It might feel a little silly at first, but sharing a few laughs together can help break the ice. Youll probably want to use Skype for your video exchanges, but dont discount the long form letter altogether. Pen pals have long served as a resource for language learners, and sharing written correspondence can still pay a valuable role in a language exchange. Why not make an effort to email each other once a week, and use simple word processing tools to make corrections for each other? It takes a bit of extra effort to sit down and write a message, but doing so will ensure you dont neglect the written word, which plays an equally important role as the speaking portion of a language.Finding a language exchange partner is a free solution, but if you really want to supercharge your learning prowess, you might also want to work with an online language tutor. With a tutor, you wont need to focus on correcting or teaching someone to better speak English, but you can instead work to fine tune your language skills exclusively. Tutors may also be better able to explain complicated linguistic principles. Many different websites offer tutoring solutions, including Verbalplanet.com and tutor.com.If youd like to get some extra help from a native speaker, but you dont have a large budget to work with, you might want to consider using a freelance site to connect with an independent worker. For example, Fiverr allows you to post one-off jobs at just $5, and there are many language teachers offering various services there. You might also want to consider posting a gig on Craigslist to find a language tutor on the cheap.3. Make Study a Daily HabitRemember when you had endless assignments, syllabuses and tests in school? As an online learner, you wont deal with any of those. Instead, youll need to find innovative ways to make your study habits part of your daily routine. If you find it challenging to keep yourself focused, follow this simple game plan to develop healthy study patterns:Set Mini GoalsYou might be surprised to learn the powerful potential of your inner voice. Research shows that nothing more than encouraging yourself to keep going can have a profound impact on your long-term stamina. Just as the age old expression goes, Rome wasnt built in a day, and neither is it plausible for you to become a world class linguist in a few short months.Instead, set mini goals you can achieve as you progress through your studies. These goals might look like:Master a challenging verb tense in both spoken and written form.Expand your vocabulary by memorizing 100 new words.Read a full novel in your target language. To successfully reach these goals, dont forget to break them down further into even smaller tasks. For example, if youve chosen a novel to read, s et smaller goals by chapter or even by pages (i.e. read two pages every morning and night). The feeling of elation you experience when you meet those goals will help propel you further.Eliminate Deterrents and DistractionsTuning out the outside world is hard enough with a traditional textbook, but the internet offers a tempting array of distractions that can keep you from focusing on your studies. If you find your study habits just arent making the cut, proactively examine where youre breaking down and try to work out how to overcome those obstacles. If you just cant seem to steer clear of social media networks or your favorite blog, use a tool like Anti-Social to prevent your computer from accessing those sites. Its a simple fix that can keep you on track.Develop AccountabilityTry as you might to keep your studying in check, many of us still find it hard to stay motivated. When push comes to shove, sometimes its necessary to find a real-life accountability partner for your language learning. Why not make some new friends through a service like Meetup and establish accountability goals? Celebrating your successes and working on your weaknesses with the help of a friend often proves immensely helpful in keeping learners focused.Or you could commit to practicing your target language for 100 days, and track your progress via 10-second daily videos on Instagram with Give It 100. The supportive community will keep you motivated, as will the joy of actually seeing your progress over time.4. Put Your Skills into PracticeAs great as the internet can be for language enthusiasts, its only a tool for learning, not a magic potion. As you learn the various aspects of a foreign language, you need to put your new-found skills to work. Speaking the language will not only help you build confidence, but it also works to cement those ideas in your brain. In an ideal world, youd spend some time studying abroad. Youll have no choice but to speak the language on a daily basis, and when surrounded by foreign speakers the real power of immersion becomes evident. If you have the means to do so, why not schedule an overseas excursion to coincide with an important language learning goal? When you know a trip is on the horizon, you may be more motivated than ever to keep studying diligently.Of course, classroom studies arent the only activity you can pursue abroad. Consider tapping into your benevolent side by volunteering with a non-profit, charity or religious group. If youre not already familiar with groups operating abroad, learn more by visiting a directory like Go Abroad. For a really affordable way to spend a longer amount of time abroad, check out HelpX and WWOOF, where you work in exchange for food and accommodation. If spending an extended period in a foreign country isnt a possibility, why not get involved with local organizations where foreigners tend to gather? Many communities have active cultural groups that sponsor events and meet-ups. If yo u live near a university, inquire as to whether the school sponsors any institutions that offer learning opportunities. Volunteering with one of these groups or attending special events can help you meet new people to speak to and learn from.Learning a new language takes hard work and dedication, and there really are no shortcuts to fluency. Nevertheless, the internet and its myriad resources can serve as an invaluable learning tool for the modern student. By procuring the right learning tools, finding practice partners, studying diligently and putting your language skills to work, youre bound to find success learning in the digital age.Adam Zetterlund is a language enthusiast living in New York City. He spent five years honing his foreign language skills in Paris and London, and he currently partners with a number of international clients in a marketing capacity. Learn more by reading his blog.

5 Spanish Authors You Absolutely Must Read Next
5 Spanish Authors You Absolutely Must Read Next Madalyn Danielson Reading is a fantastic way to work on your Spanish skills! Take a look at these recommendations for famous Spanish authors by Fairfax, CA tutor Jason N. before you head to the bookstore Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the world. For native English-speakers, learning Spanish requires the constant input and output of the four main manifestations of language: speaking, listening, writing, and reading. One of the most intimate ways to connect with a language is through its literature. Reading enables you to breathe the language, to feel the language, and to deeply connect with it. Literature also contains essential phrases and vocabulary that uniquely capture the political and social context in which a piece was written, in addition to other cultural nuances. There are many quintessential famous Spanish authors, but for the sake of this article, I will focus on the five who Iâve studied personally and who are ubiquitous in academic circles. 1. Gabriel GarcÃa Márquez Gabriel GarcÃa Márquez (âGaboâ) was a Colombian short-story writer and journalist. He is most renowned for spreading âmagical realismâ in Latin America, which incorporates magical elements into literature, as if they were part of normal life. Gaboâs most popular texts are El amor en los tiempos de cólera (Love in Times of Colera), a romantic tale of a man saving his heart for his first love for more than 50 years, and Cien años de soledad (100 years of Solitude), which narrates life in a âmythicalâ city called Macondo, representing a utopian Colombia, discovered by the father of one of its local families. It was translated in 37 languages and has sold more than 30 million copies! 2. Pablo Neruda Pablo Neruda was a Chilean political writer and poet, whose rise to fame began in his teenage years, unlike most authors who donât become famous until theyre much older or deceased. Gabo often paid homage to Neruda, as Neruda frequently advocated for social justice in the mist of rampant political corruption and exploitation of the working class in his poems. Nerudaâs works were also romantic and poignant. Among his most applauded poems is Oda al amor (Anthem to Love), which philosophizes love as torturous, beautiful, and necessary for a âfull lifeâ and adult maturity. 3. Carlos Fuentes Carlos Fuentes was a Mexican essayist. He was coined as âone of the most admired Spanish writers in the Spanish-speaking worldâ by The New York Times. His best-known publication is La muerte de Artemio Cruz (The death of Artemio Cruz), which documents a soldierâs rise to power and wealth via corruption and exploitation during the Mexican Revolution. This novel was one of the first to reveal how the spread of imperialism, capitalism, and âAmericanizationâ to developing countries like Mexico negatively affected the working class in 1960s, which highlights why Fuentes is considered one of the most ambitious and controversial authors. 4. Isabel Allende Isabel Allende is a Chilean author who usually celebrates the lives of hard-working, brave, admirable, and noble women in her novels. She draws on her personal experience and incorporates magical realism into her works, similar to Márquez. Her quintessential novel is âLa casa de los espÃrutusâ (The House of the Spirits), which tells the story of two women across a family of four generations. It exposes a flavor of culture and political milieu in Chile during the 1980s. Itâs not written chronologically and was actually turned down by several Spanish publishers before becoming a global phenomenon. Isabelâs tenacity demonstrates she clearly practiced what she preached! 5. Miguel de Cervantes Lastly, another famous Spanish author to note is poet, playwright, and novelist Miguel de Cervantes. He wrote arguably the most well-known and universally-assigned reading in Spanish and is often deemed the Shakespeare of Spanish literature. His archetypal novel âDon Quixoteâ was the first European novel ever written. Itâs satiric, featuring a âmadmanâ as a hero who exemplifies and admires âeverything great,â elucidates chivalry, and contrasts himself with a low self-esteem âsidekickâ character. Aside from authoring this timeless text among others, Cervantes popularized the saying, âPor la muestra se conoce el pañoâ (âThe proof is in the puddingâ). As you can see, there is plenty of juicy literature that can help you connect with the Spanish language. While it can be tempting to purchase the translated English version, these works are hardly the same. Much is lost in translation (even if the translator is competent), and one of the most important parts of learning a language is connecting with its literature! Despite the difficult phrases and vocabulary, I encourage you to take the plunge get the book in Spanish, so you will be forced to fine-tune your skills, expand your vocabulary, and develop a cultural acumen of Spanish-speaking countries. Want to dig even deeper? A Spanish tutor can help you decipher complex excerpts, and work with you to improve your skills further. Jason N. tutors English and Spanish in Fairfax, CA. Know, Like, Trust The Key to Creating Your Competitive Advantage - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Know, Like, Trust The Key to Creating Your Competitive Advantage - Introvert Whisperer Know, Like, Trust: The Key to Creating Your Competitive Advantage Why does one kid get picked first for playing a game at school? Is it because theyre the most popular? Is it because theyre the best at playing the game? Yes to both. Why does this same person always get picked first, or is at least among the first to be picked? Because they have a competitive advantage. Understanding what it takes to create a competitive advantage for your career is important. Just like getting picked to be on a team, you want to be picked for promotions and opportunities. You want to be one of those people other people think of when they want to have âjust the right person. That person could be you. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) What Is a Competitive Advantage? Businesses talk about competitive advantage all the time. As a manager of your career, you can learn from their thinking on this topic. In a business setting, a competitive advantage is a condition or attribute that allows the business to outperform or in some way distinguish itself from the competition. Some examples: Starbucks competitive advantage is clearly that they are everywhere. You can argue their coffee is the competitive advantage, and maybe it contributes, but itâs hard to compete as a coffee retailer against Starbucks, who is located in grocery stores, department stores and is on every other block in some cities. Definitely a competitive advantage. Apple has maintained competitive advantage by being the first to innovate a graphic user interface followed by various forms of computing ranging from cell phones to tablets to laptops and computers. Other companies have been running this past decade simply to try to catch up. In other words, a competitive advantage can be as simple as being the first one to do something, the one to offer the best price, or a combination of alluring attributes. If we look at the example of the kid getting picked first, this kid was well liked and had a noteworthy skill set. Itâs possible their advantage could have been just one of those two attributes. When you look around you, who has the competitive advantage, and what is it about them that has created this condition? If you answered, âBecause the boss likes them,â you might think that situation is a complete mystery, but itâs really not. Sure, the boss might really like them, but theres a reason for this, and you can do a lot to ensure the same status for yourself. If youve ever heard of the term know, like, trust, it can help you form your plan for creating a competitive advantage. (More about that in a minute.) Why a Competitive Advantage Is Important for Introverts Iâm sure youâve noticed the cultural âdarlingsâ are the extraverted people. Theyre certainly more noticeable and the standard all of us are measured by. For us Introverts, we donât have this built-in competitive advantage. We have to work a bit harder to simply keep up with others, much less stand out or have any competitive advantage. If youve failed to help others understand what makes you distinct from those around you, you are failing your career. You may also be failing those people because they canât use or benefit from your capabilities. Failure to create a competitive advantage means you will not get ahead, not get promotions, will struggle with the job search and will feel completely under-appreciated. You could add lost income to this list because if youre slow to get promoted, you will be slow to get increases in your paycheck. Any one of these issues is significant enough to warrant your attention, but most people who donât create competitive advantage for themselves suffer from all of these problems. I might add that when youre repeatedly facing these problems, it will ultimately change who you are. Itâs hard to stay positive and enjoy life when the biggest part of how you spend your time is deflating you each and every day. Now, back to the whole concept of know, like, trust The Anatomy of Know, Like, Trust 1. Know Once again, we can learn from business concepts and apply them to our career. Keep in mind itâs people who do business with people, which means this concept is really all about how people relate to each other. This first part of this equation (know) is about helping other people to know you. You need to help other people understand your skills, your strengths and your values. This is the recipe for what makes you unique. Aside from simply knowing that juicy list of attributes, we all want to know whatâs in it for me? Yes, we are all self-centered, as much as we try to deny it. The people you come in contact with, especially at work, need to know how you can help them. If you havenât educated those around you, you will get ignored and, from there, the whole cascade of issues I mentioned previously will be your reality. The reason you must start this process with know is because until someone understands what you bring to the party, itâs impossible to like or trust you. 2. Like Think about this for a minute: What kind of gravitational pull does someone have when you donât like them? How supportive are you of them? More than likely, you run the other way to avoid people like this. You are not likely to do anything to help or support a person you donât like, much less do anything other than the bare minimum to interact with them. Even if you donât dislike another person and are neutral about them, these same questions apply. No one goes out of their way to support or help another person who is a blank slate to them emotionally. All of this means there is good reason to have someone like you and become emotionally invested in you (and vice versa). Itâs also important to point out that when you like someone, youre more apt to pay attention to them and cut them some slack when they mess up. We become more invested in people we like and want to see things go well for them. This doesnât mean you have to set out to turn everyone into your BFF, because that wouldnât happen anyway. It simply means that as you help people to know you, you should also be engaged in finding a real connection with them. 3. Trust Trust is a foundational characteristic of all successful relationships. It is the reliance we place in another person based on their integrity, strengths, values and reliability. When you canât trust another person, you inherently question their motives and behavior. Your distrust becomes the lens through which you view them. It is possible to like a person but not trust them, which is why your competitive advantage must be founded in all three characteristics. If only 2 of the 3 exist, you really donât have the conditions necessary for forming a competitive advantage. People can know, understand and take advantage of your skill sets, but if they donât like or trust you, they will stop short right there. They wonât refer people to you, they wonât make a case for promoting you and theyll have second thoughts if opportunities crop up for which youre qualified. Trust can be a very fragile thing as it can be destroyed by only one bad act. Restoration of trust takes time and consistent behavior to restore and, even then, can be not fully rebuilt. How to Create Know, Like, Trust (and Build Your Competitive Advantage) You have complete control over how this should be orchestrated. Heres how to do it: Creating Know Communication â" This isnt always a strong suit of Introverts, but you can still mater it. Its really about looking for opportunities to update, share and help others. You donât have to turn into a blabbermouth, but you do need to freely offer up information and make it easy for others to get it from you. Focus â" What you focus on is how people come to know you. If you want to be known a certain way, then focus on that thing by talking about it and doing whatever it is. For instance, if you want to be known as a social media guru, then learn it, do it and help others to do it. Consistency â" If you only occasionally do the other two items, people wonât know what to make of you. You have to be consistent.
